Have you ever thought about this question, and why it is so true? What about yourself do you behave differently when you are away from home? Of course you do, and so does everyone else no matter what they might tell you.
No Conformation to Social Stereotypes whilst on holiday
First of all when you are away on holiday no one knows you so why stick to the normal social stereotypes that govern our everyday life. In fact isn’t that what going on holiday is all about, a brief escape from the mundane everyday chores of our daily lives. No more waking up to the sound of an alarm clock making sure the kids get dressed, and sent off to school. Deciding what clothes to wear, before rushing out the door to drive in that horrible congested traffic or being packed into the train like those other entire unfortunate sardines heading off to the office.
The hum drum of day to day life
Then hey! Guess what? After yet another stimulating day at work it is time to go through the horrible drive home, and living in Britain god knows it is usually raining which only adds to our misery and sense of depression.
Even at the weekend when we have a little reprieve for a couple of days there are still things to do like the weekly shopping, and running errands that we haven’t had time to do during the week, and yes all the while in the back of our minds is that horrible knowledge that Monday morning will soon be here, and I will be waking up to the sound of that Alarm clock saying It’s time to get up and jump on that hamster wheel once again. Come on now you know you have to do this you have responsibilities, and bills to pay, it’s not like you are the only one who has to go to work.
So the answer is yes! We all behave differently while we are away from home telling our fellow holiday-makers how well off we are living in a nice detached house in some little village that no one has ever heard of, and ok we might stay up a bit longer than normal. Another drink? “Well why not I’m on holiday”.
We might say to ourselves I don’t know, this restaurant looks a little expensive but what the hell we are on holiday we can worry about the bills when we get home I work hard all year-long I deserve to treat myself once and awhile.
Then of course there is the holiday romance which seems as popular as ever with the younger crowd. No one knows you or your history, or the fact you have a dead end job or run a mile at the sound of the word commitment. Here on holiday you can be the highly successful person you wished you were. Telling people that you are thinking of putting your name down for that new BMW that is due out soon, instead of saying that you have a ten-year-old Corsa on its last legs parked outside your dingy flat.
I think that everyone on holiday takes other peoples tales with a pinch of salt, in fact I would be surprised if anyone ever told you what a mundane dull life they had back home. No that can all wait because right now I am on Holiday.
I think the Advertisers on Madison Avenue hit a home-run when they came up with the slogan “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”.
