Norrköping is situated in eastern Sweden and is the country’s tenth largest city. It is located at the mouth of the river Motala Ström and has a long history, fraught with wars and battles. As a result, nothing of the medieval Norrköping remains today. However, there are many attractions in the city that appeal to visitors from across the globe. If you are planning a trip to Norrköping, be sure to add the following suggestions to your itinerary.

Shopping

If you enjoy shopping whilst visiting a new city, there’s plenty to keep you busy in Norrköping. You’ll find a vibrant mix of department stores, shopping centres and busy streets, selling everything from big name brands to individual handmade pieces. Most shops are within easy walking distance of the city centre, but the districts of Hageby, Knäppingsborg and Gamla Stan (the Old Town) are just a short tram ride away and also provide plenty of retail therapy opportunities. Look out for the second hand stores and flea markets where you can often pick up brilliant bargains.

Nightlife

Norrköping has a bustling nightlife scene that caters for all tastes. Whether you enjoy a good meal in an upmarket restaurant followed by a cosy evening in a quiet pub, or you like to hit the nightclubs until the small hours, there’s something for everyone in this city. Borgen is a popular bar amongst tourists and locals who enjoy live music. Most bars and clubs are within easy walking distance of hotels and reliable tram and bus services run through the night. There’s also a wide variety of theatre shows to choose from.

Activities

Those who enjoy keeping busy will love a break in Norrköping. There are several golf courses, tennis courts, shooting ranges and swimming areas with world class facilities. If you’re in the mood for trying something a little different, pay a visit to the fishing area in the centre of the city. Despite being in the middle of such a bustling area, visitors can fish in the river for trout and salmon that have been known to weigh up to 10 kg. Make sure that you visit the tourist office to pick up a fishing permit.

Museums

Norrköping is home to several museums that may be of interest to travellers. The Municipal Museum is located in the centre of the old industrial landscape on the banks of the river. There are many different exhibitions throughout the year that tell the history of the city and the story of the industries which once fuelled the economy. A gift shop, restaurant and café can all be found within the museum. During the summer months, the café is moved outside to the river banks which offer wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.

The Museum of Art houses one of the foremost collections of paintings and sculptures in Sweden and makes an interesting afternoon for those interested in finding out more about the country’s art culture. Guided tours and workshops are offered during the summer.

Conclusion

Whether you enjoy days of shopping followed by nights on the town, or prefer a more relaxed agenda of museums and culture, you’re bound to find the perfect option for you in Norrköping. With flight times from London being just over two hours, it’s a great city to spend a long weekend.
