With over 45,000 students studying at three local universities, Leeds is one of the best cities in the UK to live as a student! Leeds has all the variation you might want, it has places for cheap drinks and places to go out for the night, and it also has a beautiful nature side as well. Leeds is a city for a student of every type, and we have listed our top four best things to do in Leeds as a student!
1. Brudenell Social Club: Live Music, Drinks, Hangout
If you are looking for a place for cheap cold beers, and live music, then all the students will recommend you take a look at Brudenell Social Club! What started out as a club for the working man, has evolved into an eclectic little venue for all sorts of bands and groups. Although this building may look slightly gloomy and unappealing from the outside, as soon as you step in you’re introduced to a lively bar with very affordable drink prices.
This little hole in the wall club has had some pretty big names, with both Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand traveling here to play secret gigs. That being said, very commonly you will see some local talent up on stage who really know what they’re doing! Along with this, if you are looking for a place to chill out after class, grab a drink, and try to snag a pool table!
2. Call Lane: Restaurants, Cocktail Bars, and Nightclubs
If you are looking for a night out on the town, then you can’t go wrong with giving Call Lane a visit! This section of Leeds has all you can need if you’re looking for well-regarded cuisine, swanky cocktail bars, or a fun night out on the town. When you’re a student in Leeds it’s important to go out and experience the finer things in life, and here at Call Lane you can definitely do that!
If you are looking for some great food, then I suggest you take a look at Art’s Café. Although Art’s has the word Café in their name, it is much more than that. Art’s features dishes from all over the world in an extremely relaxed and enjoyable setting. With local art featured all over the wall and a plethora of tasty dishes available, you can’t go wrong with Art’s!
If you are looking for Cocktail Bars inside Call Lane, then have no fear, there are quite a few good choices available! My first choice for cocktail bars in Call Lane, is definitely The Maven. The Maven is a pre-prohibition American styled bar with an amazingly elegant and interesting environment. If you’re looking for drink recommendations, I definitely suggest you take a look at their margaritas. The Maven creates their own specialties and produces great drinks like their Spiced Margaritas and their “Smoking Tommy”.
If you are looking for a fun night on the town with your friends, then Call Lane has some great nightclubs that all will enjoy! One of the most popular clubs down in Call Lane has to be Brooklyn. Brooklyn is truly the epitome of partying and having a good time in Call Lane. With a huge selection of drinks, including nearly any draft beer in the world, there is definitely something for everyone. In the back of Brooklyn, you’ll find an open garden that is perfect for sitting down and enjoying your drinks with your friends, but inside is where the party is going. One of the featured attractions of Brooklyn is their beer pong. Every night the club has a few beer pong tables set up, and allows you and your mates play for the night’s champion of bragging rights.
3. Roundhay Park: Scenic Walks, Picnics
If you are looking for a change of pace of drinking and a night on the town, then why not check out some of the greatest nature attractions Leeds has to offer. Roundhay Park is one of the most expansive nature parks in Leeds, and with it only being a 20-minute bus ride away from the city centre, it makes it great for after class as a place to relax and rewind. This three-mile-wide park features beautiful gardens, quite a few lakes and ponds, and the awesome “Tropical World Conservation Park”. This park is absolutely beautiful, and just spending an afternoon enjoying a nice day, taking in the fresh air, and enjoying nature can really reset your batteries after a long week of class.
Tropical World is the home to the UK’s second largest collection of tropical plants and animals. This conservational park takes you through an incredible journey through the rainforest environment, the mangroves, desert, and the nocturnal world! Through this journey you will get to see all sorts of exotic animals like monkeys, and meerkats in an environment that is just like their home. I often would go here a few times a year and just take in all the incredible animals and plants that inhabit this world that we don’t get to see often. This is a great experience for people for any ages, but it actually is of great value for students with the price only being 5 or 6 quid.
4. Pop Boutique: Unique Fashion and Shopping
If you are looking for a new outfit that really shows of your unique and quirky side, then I would definitely recommend you take a look at Pop Boutique. This boutique clothing store really focuses on vintage and alternative clothing styles. With their inventory constantly being updated, you are really likely to find an awesome outfit from any given decade!
This boutique features both a men’s and women’s section with some great vibrant pieces available for purchase. Along with this, the last time I was at Pop Boutique they had an entire section based off the “60’s Summer of Love”, so if this time period interests you, then it definitely would be an awesome place to check out!
